1. My computer restarts when I haven't asked for it

I like setting up my browser and e-mail and word and excel and msn and all my other stuff in a very specific way. Setting things up in that way takes a bit of time. If I have to do that often, then I start to get annoyed. Windows is always doing these seemingly random reboots when I'm not at my computer. This really fucks up my system. OK, so once in a while the reboot is because of some update and the computer needs to be rebooted to apply the update. Well, I would like to choose myself when to reboot and apply that update thank you. Whoever implemented automatic reboots is a moron. Not only that, but in Windows 7 my computer sometimes reboots without an update being applied. I can sit at my computer and then all of a sudden programs starts to die one by one and then system is rebooting. No message of warning, no note about updates, just bye bye. Extremely annoying.

I'm also loosing a bit of work this way. Yes, I should know that I should always save anything I work with in 5 minute intervals when using Windows. But I'm sometimes very oblivious to the outside world when I'm focusing on something and I can go hours without saving my work. On a reboot that I haven't chosen, all that work is lost.

2. Computer needs to be rebooted

Why do you have to reboot a computer with Windows on it all the time? When I'm on linux I can go for months without rebooting or turning off the computer. Kernel updates, driver updates, software updates, everything is done without any need of rebooting the computer. On windows it is not uncommon to reboot more than once per day. Why? Stupid Microsoft.

3. Things are so slow

When switching between Linux and Windows in a dual-boot system, it is really noticeable how slow Windows is. It takes longer time to boot, it takes longer time to start programs, in games the frames per second is lower, etc etc etc... I even notice a difference when resizing windows. Click on the edge of a window to resize it, in Linux things happen instantly without any kind of noticeable delay, but in Windows there is a slight and annoying delay in everything. If you have been using Windows for a long time, you will be used to this so it becomes a lot less annoying, but the difference is still there and just knowing about the difference is annoying.

4. MS way or the highway

In Linux, there are at least 10 ways of doing anything you would like to do with your computer. Don't like your browser, here are 10 others to pick from. Don't like your terminal, here are 100 others to pick from. Don't like your window manager, here are 10 others to pick from. Don't like your theme, here are millions of others to pick from. Don't like your word processor, here are 10 others to pick from. Don't like any of the Linux software, here's a HOWTO run Windows software in Linux. Don't like Linux or Windows software, here's how you run Macintosh software on Linux. Anything is possible, if the user wants it he/she can get it.

In Windows, it's MS way and nothing else. Sure, if you don't like MS Word you can go on the Internet and download OpenOffice.org (standard Linux office suite) from Sun. But you have to know that it is available, there is nothing in Windows saying that anything else is available. In Linux, the installers for everything is available in the main menu, just a few clicks away. And have you ever tried to uninstall Internet Explorer from a Windows system? Don't even think about it. I've never met a good dictator, and Microsoft is a lousy one.

5. Disk space

Why is it that everything that comes from Microsoft is so huge, measured in MB? Compare the same functionality between Linux and Windows and you will find that equivalent Windows is at least 5-10 times larger than the Linux version. No wonder things are slow, when you have to push 10 times more data through the CPU and RAM.

I have a theory on this. Microsoft is in evil cohorts with the hardware industry. Being the top selling OS (because of people's habits, not because they are the best) means they can dictate for a lot of end-users what kind of hardware they should buy. It is possible to run a browser and a word processor in Windows 95 on a very old computer, and this is what most people use their PC's for. Yet, Windows 7 has a lot higher hardware requirements. For what? Running a browser and word processor at the same speed. It has to be some sort of deal between Microsoft and the hardware industry, to push development forward. As a gamer, I like to have a fast system. But that system would be even faster if the OS was a bit more optimal, rather than sucking up system resources just to force me to get even better hardware.

6. Blatant stealing

What did Microsoft ever invent? The name "Windows". Everything else was stolen from either Macintosh/Apple or Xerox. All the "new" functionality you see in Microsoft products have been stolen from others. I will give Microsoft one thing; their office suite is nicely packaged. But anything in their office suite is available in a better version in Linux. It's just that in Linux it isn't very nicely packaged and you really need to know what you are doing to get the same functionality as you do in MS Office with a few mouse clicks. So packaging is good in MS Office, but all the functionality everywhere is stolen. Internet Explorer was stolen from Netscape. MSN Messenger was stolen from ICQ. Word was stolen from WordPerfect. Excel was stolen from Lotus123. Windows was stolen from Apple. Etc, etc, etc.

So stealing the best bits from everyone innovating things and putting them together made Microsoft into the huge company they are today. Not paying the innovators a single dime made Microsoft the rich company they are today. Selfish, egotistical, egocentered. Why wouldn't you hate Microsoft?

7. Lack of security

If you start up a computer that has Windows on it and plug in an internet cable, it takes about 10 minutes before you have a virus on your harddrive. And that is without surfing or doing anything, just plugging it in. Happened to my girlfriend a few months back. She installed Windows, plugged in the computer without a router firewall in between and left it on for a while before going online to find an antivirus software which then discovered lots of viruses on her freshly installed system. In order to keep Windows safe, you have to have a router firewall plus a Windows firewall plus antivirus software. And that is just keeping the computer safe from when it is plugged in to the Internet, not doing anything. If you are going to surf the web and install software etc, you have to have even more security like adaware and similar programs.

In Linux, there is no need to run antivirus. A virus can't get in. This is not because of lack of trying on the virus programmers part - lots of high profile web servers and company file servers etc run Linux. Hitting those servers would be a dream come true for a virus programmer wanting to make a name for himself. But Linux security is almost impenetrable. There is one way for a virus to get into a Linux system: if you run Wine (the windows abstraction layer to enable Windows software). But even then, the virus would only have access to the Wine folder where the windows software is (or possibly your home folder - equal to My Documents in Windows) so the damage would be minimal since there are very few programs that can be effected.

Why is Windows so unsecure? There are even viruses and trojans written for MS Word and MS Excel and MS Outlook. Stupid Microsoft.

8. Disk fragmentation

If you write a file to your harddrive, you expect it to stay there. Microsoft says: no fucking way it will stay there, we will redistribute your files all over the harddrive whenever we feel like it. Why? Windows will split up files that haven't been written to at all into small parcels and distribute those parcels over the harddrive. If you want to access that file, the harddrive has to work twice as hard as normal to find all those little parcels. So you have to run a special software to defragment your harddrive. Then Microsoft start messing up your ordered system again, the very minute you are finished with your defragmentation. This means if you want an optimal system you have to defragment your harddrive every day. Not only is this slowing down the system, it forces you to do unnecessary things.

In Linux I don't even know where to look for a defragmentation program. I'm sure there is one, it's just not needed. So why does Microsoft need one?

9. Money

Linux is free. 90% of Linux software is free. The software you have to pay to use is usually from software companies who started out making things for Microsoft Windows. In Windows, you have to pay for the OS as well as anything else you want on there. And like I've said before, the same functionality (and more) is available in Linux for free as it is in Windows for lots of money. Stupid Microsoft.

10. Binding contracts

There have actually been companies who have wanted to leave Microsoft and start using Linux on a wider basis. When this happens, Microsoft lawyers jump into their offices and when they leave, the company has deserted all plans of migrating to Linux. I have no idea what they are saying in those meetings, but it even happens in Sweden. My guess would be that the M$ lawyers threaten to pull a lawsuit that they know won't come out in their favor in the end, but the legal process will be so huge and costly that it just isn't going to work for the company who was just thinking of using Linux more. So they are forcing companies to stick to their products without even having a binding agreement about it. If I were an executive which this happened to, I would go berserk. Microsoft is lucky that I'm just a nobody.

MSN messenger was stolen from Yahoo Messenger and not ICQ

I think the worst thing about Microsoft is their faulty product Windows. They have a bad nucleus code which causes the system to tie knots onto itself, kinda like growing a yarn ball... only more erratic and tangled. Instead of starting anew and making a stable product, they keep using the same mistakes over and over and expand on it with zillions of updates plus the fact that you need to use cleaning applications like disk defragmentation, scandisk, registry cleaners, anti-ad-ware etc...

When they got such a huge budget, they should really start out fresh - From scratch! - and present something actually stable and functional. If the foundation is bad, it won't be a good build until you put a different, proper foundation. While we wait for this, they should pay the distributers of computer cleaning and organizing applications in our stead. Windows users shouldn't have to pay to do Microsoft's work and keep the system functional
